With an approved PowUnity BikeTrax tracker, you also get a movement and geofenced proximity alarm, to alert you if your bike is being tampered with or moved.

And if your bike can't be recovered, you're fully insured including accessories.

An additional bonus is you can share your live GPS tracking with loved ones or friends - so if you have a fall or mechanical fault out on a ride, they know exactly where you are to come help.

Tracker installation

The tracker costs £150, plus around 2 hours* labour to install, set up your phone with the app and test. So that's a one-off installed cost of £250. you pay that to me, and the insurance you pay monthly or annually direct to Backpedal. The tracker is covered by a two-year warranty, and the first year's GPS tracking service is included in the install price. 

Service fees

For a £5k ebike, the service including insurance and live tracking is just £20/month or £220 each year.

After the first year, you need to pay for an annual subscription to the GPS tracking service - this is currently £34.90. 

Total costs

• Year 1 cost is £250 for tracker installation and testing + £220 for insurance and recovery = £470

• Year 2 and beyond is £34.90 for GPS tracking plus £220 insurance and recovery = £254.90

I've had a BikeTrax GPS tracker installed on my eMTB for two years, and it gives huge peace of mind when it's locked up or I'm out riding alone. Here's my review of the tracker. The BikeTrax backup battery lasts for 20 days, even if the ebike battery is flat or removed. an extra battery can be fitted, giving over a month's GPS tracking - ideal for bikes that don't get ridden much.
